My name is Azmi Shahrin, Distinguished Toastmaster, Past President of both Extol Toastmasters Club and Kelab Pidato Perdana. I received my early but most important education at the Malay College of Kuala Kangsar (MCKK). After SPM, I won a Shell Scholarship to read Accounting and Economics at the University of Kent, United Kingdom, which I successfully completed with a Second Class Uppers Honours. Presently, I am a Masters in Economics candidate at the University of Malaya, where I am also serving as the President of the Faculty of Economics and Administration Postgraduate Club. I am also active in politics and youth organizations. I am the Ketua Pergerakan Pemuda UMNO Cawangan USJ14, Setiausaha Pemuda UMNO Zon USJ, AJK Biro Belia & Sukan Pemuda UMNO Bahagian Kelana Jaya and AJK Gerakan Belia 4B Kawasan Kelana Jaya. I don't think I am a bright spark but MENSA thinks I can keep in their good company.

I am a senior member of the Toastmasters International organization, having served as Presidents of several clubs and Area Governor. Currently, I am the Assistant Division C Governor in charge of Marketing, District 51 Toastmasters Leadership Institute Trainer and Counselor of The 1st Malaysian Gavel Club. I was named the Division C Toastmaster of The Year in 2005 in recognition of my dedicated and exemplary service for Toastmasters International. I am a well respected speaker who has won awards at various speech contests at the Club, Area and Division levels. My most recent success was being the Runner-Up at the Division B Speech Evaluation Contest in October 2006.

Professionally, I have had the privilege of letting Shell and Maxis use my marketing and Brand Management talents where I brought them prodigious amounts of profits in exchange for a pittance. I thought better now to earn my own bread. I am now the Principal Trainer for Dynamic Speakers Training Centre specializing in public speaking, communication and soft skill programs.

In the past 5 years, I have helped hundreds of students, teachers, lecturers and adults of all walks to develop communication and public speaking skills, which are vital skills for success and self actualization. I fully support the Ministry of Education's policy in using English to teach mathematics and science because I truly believe that this is our best hope in reconciling the twin demands of keeping to the aspirations of our national language Bahasa Melayu and yet promote English as the international language of knowledge acquisition. I hope that my contribution will help Malaysians to communicate with style, effectively and confidently.

I'd like to share an interesting conversation I had. Read on..

At the end of a Public Speaking Program, Mrs Ivy Yap - mother of Eugene Yap (my participant) told me, "Encik Azmi, I am surprised to hear that you teach English at the Subang Jaya Buddhist Temple!"

"Why are you surprised?" I asked.

"I am surprised because you are a Malay," she replied.

"Ha! Ha!" I chuckled, "Mrs Yap, actually, you shouldn't be surprised that I teach at the Buddhist Temple. You should be more surprised that the Buddhist Temple wants me to teach and that the parents trust me with their children. Think about it, ok?"

Mrs Tan said the following about me.

It is indeed a privilege to know Azmi since Dec 2005 when I sent my son and two daughters to attend the Extol Public Speaking Workshop. And when The 1st Malaysian Gavel Club was initially set up in early 2006 in Subang Jaya Buddhist Association, Azmi encouraged my daughters to join as members and subsequently, my eldest daughter, Swea Phin, was elected as Vice-President (Membership).

With constant and unfailing encouragement, guidance, training and mentorship, Azmi has surely and steadily build-up a pool of lively and resourceful young people in the art of communication and public speaking. His superb enthusiasm and "never give up" attitude on this group of youngsters demonstrates his keeness and exceptional passion to share and uplift the level of communicating in good English amongst especially the younger generation irrespective of race and religion across all boundaries. Azmi indeed is a rare gem!
